2024 Netflix Survival Thriller Joins All-Time Most-Watched List With Top 3 Viewership Record
Summary
- "Under Paris" is one of Netflix's most popular non-English movies, ranking third of all time.
- The film's success globally indicates an inevitable sequel, as disaster films like this tend to entertain viewers.
- A potential sequel was teased in the post-credits scene, hinting at a continuation of the shark invasion storyline.
Out of all the foreign Netflix movies released over the years, Under Paris has been an overwhelming success for the streaming service, leading one to believe that a sequel is in the cards. The 2024 French survival thriller film, directed by Xavier Gens, chronicles a shark outbreak in the unlikeliest of places — Paris, France. Lilith, a shortfin mako shark, travels from the Pacific Ocean to the River Seine in Paris, threatening the citizens of France's largest city. Under Paris' "Sharks in the Seine" premise may seem ridiculous, but the movie's horrors and thrills seemingly drew a substantial crowd in.
Under Paris debuted on June 5, 2024, and swiftly shot to the top of the streaming service's charts. Netflix's 2024 survival horror thriller received mixed reviews from critics (it has a 63 percent Tomatometer score averaged from over 40 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes), with some comparing it to Jaws and praising the film for its balance of thrills and environmental themes. However, Under Paris' Audience Score, which sits at 31 percent, is slightly contradictory to its popularity on the streaming platform. Nevertheless, Netflix likely cares more about viewership totals than reviews, meaning that an Under Paris sequel is inevitable.
Under Paris 2 Is A Lot More Likely After Netflix Viewership Records
Under Paris Is One Of Netflix's Most Watched Non-English Movies
Netflix shared its top 10 most popular non-English original movies of all time, and as of August 4, 2024, Under Paris sits at number three on Netflix's listwith 167,900,000 hours viewed and 96,900,000 views. The only two movies above the 2024 survival thriller are Troll and Society of the Snow, with 103,000,000 and 98,500,000 views, respectively. Under Paris could easily surpass both foreign films, though, especially if Netflix greenlights a sequel, which is a very real possibility.

Black Crab | March 18, 2022 | 1 hour 55 minutes | 103,300,000 | 53,900,000 |
Given Under Paris' popularity on Netflix, it's only a matter of time before a sequel is announced. A Troll sequel is in development, while a Society of the Snow sequel is almost impossible given that it's based on a true story. So, it stands to reason that the streaming service would want to capitalize on the 2024 survival thriller's success and order a second movie.
